Rematch

So I was late getting to Baton Rogue to ref a double header. Not at all my fault, and thanks to my driver Geri, we made a 4.5 hr drive in 3 hrs and 10 minutes.

First bout was Magnolia Roller Vixens vs Capital City Defenders, Red Sticks B team. Didn’t see much of it as I ended up falling a sleep taking a cat nap while gearing up.-long busy work week. While watching the bout, I got a little razzing from Delirium Trigger for being late. Apparently it was announced that I was reffing when I hadn’t arrived. And Good ole Stash Merkin clamped me on the shoulder with a hearty hello. DJ TJ greeted me during halftime and caught up on upcoming Louisiana bouts.

Next match up was Houston Knockouts vs Diables Rogues. Now this is a rematch from a bout Red Stick won in Houston in January of last year. Notably missing from Red Sticks lineup was Rock Bottom, she along with Jams P Sullivan and Glock Strap, make über effective walls while Rock taunts skaters she forces into recycling.

First few Jams RSRD had a good showing getting lead jam status, but HRD’s Knockouts figured something out an quickly kept getting lead jam after jam. Syrenge, Grrl Friday, Bloody Hell & … I just blanked… (sorry other HRD jammer) had a wicked rotation. Staggering their poodles effectively . BAZINGA! Just remembered, had a 20 point power jam in the second half.
In one of the last few jams Glock swooped in and nailed HRDs Bloody Hell square in the chesticles, knocking 4311 back onto her, butt I can’t tell you right now. Bloody Hell gave Glock a “that was a good one smirk”. No complaints since it was a clean hit, and Glock had a bit of a proud smile. This to me far outshined a Jammer on Jammer Take Out early on in the game. In any case stay tuned next week is Acadiana vs…

Spindletop season opener

April 14, 2012

First score keeping job of the year. Double header tonight and it’s gonna be a fun night. Great to see old familiar faces among skaters, NSOs and officials. Derby <3 is strong here, Rubi is loving with her gracious smile and Snickers is a laugh a minute with her dry wit. I’m not used to sitting down during a bout so this is gonna be an interesting night being score keeper. The setup for tonight is different from last year, where the scoreboard, lineup and announcers were at the the straightaway between turn 4 & 1. This year it’s at turn 4, which used to be turn 2. It’s a better vantage point for the NSOs to watch whats going on.

Tonight’s first bout is between Red Stick Roller Derby and Spindletop Roller Derby. Already I see a fan favorite Glock Strap, Turbo Tyke. Sadly Rock Bottom didn’t make it out here. Moxie Balboa & Jams P Sullivan are Beasts! They jammed pretty much all night, Lil Miss Maggot gave them some relief in jam 16, and TKO spent jams 12-14 in the box, due to a misunderstanding in being released. In the second period Maggot got into the rotation in the 7th jam with Jams P. Sullivan. Tank goodness fouled out in jam 18. Glock Strap is quite an effective B3 sweeper and B1 commanding the red wall.

Spindletop managed to figure out how to break out of the wall of red in the second half and rallied the crowd and doubled their points from the first half at 36 to end it 92-138 Red Stick. Emma Propriate, Foto Finish, AndyConDuh and Choctaw did did most of the jam rotations. Bootylicious & Ravoltin’ Rambo were knocking’ red jammers out left n right as best they could & succeeded more often than not, but red was resilient. All in all it was a great action packed first game and I can’t wait for bout #2 to get started.

Home away from home

As usual, a few months ago I signed up to ref for Alamo City pretty much for all of their home bouts and a few aways. This bout in particular I was excited about, because they were playing against Red Stick Roller Derby. I’ve had the chance to see both play at Spindletop. RSRD I’ve only been able to see again at the Derby South Belle Ringer in Gulfport, Mississippi @ Harrison Skate Park where they took 3rd place. Personally I think they could’ve made 2nd. ACRG on the other hand I’ve had more opportunities to ref for the love affair has been going strong for some time. So it was quite exciting for me to see Red Stick on ACRGs schedule.

Sadly one of my favorite Red Stick Skaters no longer skates with them. of course when seems like across town in Houston is quite a ways away in Louisiana, just looking at a map it doesn’t seem easy to get anywhere. So it’s game day and I find myself working with Velocireftor again, last time was in Beaumont late last summer or early fall, and also with Dr. Math (guess his profession). No I must say, I wish all skaters would take their penalties like Glock Strap. Where many skaters make a sound or gesture of exasperation, whether directed to themselves or to the ref, Black 9 has a thin smile, nods acknowledgement and races to the box. I’m gonna guess she works with psychotic rhesus monkeys for a living to be able to stay so calm.  Jams P Skullivan-A113, poor thing was getting battered by green most of the night. But I swear A113 has heart like her teammate Moxie Balboa’s, namesake, Rocky Balboa. By the end of the game I had kinda envisioned Green as Drago and A133 as Rocky in IV, but she kept coming back in. As for my favorite Red Stick player, Rock Bottom, whom I remember from Belle Ringer, is excellent at forcing an opposing skater to come in behind her. I simply love how she taunts them, very aware of pack and out of play penalties. Even though during the bout I’m watching for penalties, where the pack is in relation to skaters who may draw another penalty, skaters who are sent to the box when it’s full, other refs zooming through to keep up with their jammer, NSOs whom not to try and run over, and other miscellaneous hundred and one things to watch for. I can still catch an amazing play or recognize talent.

With all the talent Red stick has, they were able to minimize ACRGs scoring in the second half. Realizing the threat that L A DodgeHer is who seems to only need about width of her skates to get through the pack. Speedyrella true to her name solid walls kept ACRG scoring. Again Red Stick proved adaptable and kept ACRG from scoring the same amount of points in the second half, while managing to more than double their first half score.

I look forward to working with both of these teams in the future, provided they’ll have me, for as many seasons as my skates and back will take me.
