man named Monday

Yellow Rose Roller Derby had the largest turn out to their meet and greet Monday night! One of the most exciting things was the mix of attendees. From retired HRD skaters, rec league skaters, former skaters, never skated before and used-to-artist-skate. plus a few potential refs, or unknowing derby widows supporting their spouses.

Unfortunately Rosie and Tex couldn’t chat with everyone to get to know each other a little better. However, I think Tex might have something up her sleeve to remedy that.

With derby season season kicking off already, I’m looking forward to what 2013 has to offer. Both within the league and general derby world events.

I’m Baaaack

Some of you might know that I have been missing for quite some time. Others might say, not long enough. Then again you might not care, or are even groan “crap! I’m not rid of him.” Well I am now head ref of the newest league in the Southwest side of the Greater Houston area, Yellow Rose Derby Girls.

Personally, I think a league is a reflection of coaches, refs, NSOs, volunteers and admin staff. Coaches of course grind and grill the fresh meat, train up the skaters, and carve out the hearts of refs who miss calls (in their minds or post bouts). Refs ensure the safely of the skaters and understanding of the rules. NSOs are in charge of quickly and accurately recording stats during a bout and often double duty as volunteers in laying down the track, triple checking roster lineups and skaters present, merch, guest swag packets/bags, and a list of stuff that deserves its own blog post. Admins who have to deal with contracts, skater info, league politics and behind-the-scenes thankless tasks too numerable to mention and mostly don’t wish the headache of even knowing about them.

It’s truly an honor to be asked to be head ref and be responsible for the safety of the skaters and the professional representation of the league as a whole.

Centex cancer awareness

So I got to announce with Phil Arnold at Frank Mayborn civic center for Centex Rollergirl’s final bout HOME of the season. Both the Sirens & Nightmares were split up into a Black and Pink team.

Felt good to be back out in the derby world n getting derby

Sad ref face

So I missed out on some derby this week because I was working. It’s kinda like a repeat of earlier this season when I couldn’t make bouts due to lack of transportation. Hopefully the megamillions ticket I bought will remedy that

Louisiana Saturday Night

so, Hard G & I thought we were running late due to unexpected traffic & rain.
originally set to jam time this bout, but derby isnt very militaristic, so people drop out on a whim or for personal reasons. This is why I always bring my ref gear, theres always a chance I can guest ref even if I’m just showing up as a fan.
in any case I ended up working the penalty box with Hard G as sin bin manager. Acadiana has some experience with slick polished concrete though it was Gulf Coasts home court.
I was surprised to see Mini-Me, but I had a few secs to chat w/ her and found out that shes getting some more experience so she can try out for Houston Roller Derby. Speaking of, heard that a skater is gonna be moving to lake charles at the end of the season and possibly training GCRG, that’ll be an ibteresting to watch next season.
as always afterparty with skaters refs n coaches get together talk derby, strategy & life.

This Weekend in Derby

Holy crap!
Saturday I’m going to be in Lake Charles Jam Timing. Acadiana Rollergirls v Gulf Coast RG ranked #1 offense & #2 in defense respectively according to Derby South rankings.

Whats derby south? Im glad you asked, its an informal division of southern derby leagues across Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida .. And I feel like I’m forgetting a state. Leagues oft known as ‘renegade’ as well as WFTDA apprentice, the ranking system as well as other stats predictions are quite accurate. Last years Derby South Tournament, Belle Ringer held in Gulfport Miss had a predition writeup and post tourney article in DNN South Central. This year itll be held in Mobile Alabama. I certainly hope to make the cut for ref crew.

Its that time again! Alamo City Rollergirls 3rd Annual Mashup is upon us this sunday Sunday SUNDAY! Last years bout, squares vs greasers was a barn burner
Every
Single
Jam
I dont think L.A. DodgeHer has lived it down and it was the best bout I saw in the past 12 months (Montreal v TXRG & Montreal v HRD in Houston were a close 2nd & 3rd)

This year instead of security I’m scheduled to Jam Ref. My calves are already tired from having t chase LA for half a bout.

All in all itll be another derby filled weekend spanning over 600 miles round trips.

Northside Fury @ Rocket City

so this bout I was planning on spectating. Had been out of town for nearly a month and not been in touch w/ my original home team, Northside Fury. Nor had I heard from Rocket City’s head ref as to what ref/NSO spots they may or may not need to fill.

But I showed up early anyway just to TS & catch up with skaters n officials. Sadly I only knew/recognized 3 Northside skaters (I need to visit them more often). Once hellos were outta the way I ended up on the NSO list for the penalty box, working with PB Queen Courtney Hate, not to b confused with PBJ ref/skater/trainer extraordinaire. Hard G took to teaching various NSO tasks prior to the bout and official wise it ran pretty smoothly. Something else that’s noteworthy, at least from what I know, this was SK8-B8’s first bout as head ref. Which I’d say was ran pretty smoothly, aside from the nearly 3 min official timeout just before the end of the game. RCRG’s ref crew has come a long way from their early days in stripes.

The Rocket City roster was nearly full of Seasoned skaters. Either had played with RCRG for more than 3 bouts, or had played with other leagues. There were only about 4 skaters I hadn’t seen in a bout before.
Northside Furies, thats the plural of Fury as opposed to something else, had red waves o’pain, bashin brownie, ragin’ rican, bexter, flash, hello kidney & cyber bully. The rest of their roster (forgive me if I forgot anyone) were fresh meat. Northside genuinely surprised me, as the underdog I had pictured a bar being set and they exceeded it. With some finese practice and training I think they can get their new group of skaters up to the same level their league was at just a few short months ago.
All leagues have a little something I like about them so I can never say with certainty “THIS league is my favorite” but northside’s determination and dedication have a special place in my heart.

RollerCon 2012 redux

Holy crap
So now I’m in line at TSA for my flight to Mexico n just have to touch up on final thoughts on RollerCon. I didn’t take a class or watch a full bout or go to all the parties, I perused a few of the vendors but I still had a blast! How? If I didn’t do all the fun cool stuff? Well for one I was an official both on and off skates and got some kudos from other officials two fans a few skaters, one of them from team USA and they remembered me from another time we met.

AND I volunteered in a few departments got some swag and got to meet n get to know skaters n officials from leagues all over the world, Hi Susy Pow! All this plus peeking my head into some of the parties, chilling at the pool and walking the strip all makes for an ensured trip to Vegas next jul -31 aug 4. Did I mention? If you volunteer you can get a discount on the NEXT years ticket price up to getting a free pass!!!

Well time for a random selection pat down see y’all in week or so

RollerCon how I Hate/Love you

Holy crap
So the last 2 days have just been officiating some water, a REALLY REALLY late breakfast. A lot of awesome derby and friends both old n new galore. RollerCon the past three days have been kicking my ass, I’ve got 2 more dreadful days and then the countdown to jul 31 next year begins.

RollerCon2012

So I popped my rollercon cherry and signed up to volunteer for a ton of hours. First day signed up as a Vendor for 6 hours. I thought it meant i would get assigned to a vendor and help them setup and sell stuff. Well i was partly right. Basically any vendor that shows up and wants help gets help unloading from the dock to their booth.

All that after driving 22 hours from Austin. Woulda made it sooner but ran into traffic in El Paso. Had a 2 hour break so instead of a nap I ate the lunch dinner breakfast an lunch I missed. Then did inventory & classroom, had no clue wtf this was but it was just accounting fir what went out to what dept, so they have an idea of what they need for RC13. Finally after midnight i got off volunteering and couldnt fall asleep til about 2. I dont think i moved in my sleep
